Every year, the launch of a new Galaxy Ultra device raises the same question: has Samsung delivered a genuine leap forward, or simply refined an already successful formula?

After spending nearly a month with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, my conclusion is clear. Samsung is no longer trying to redefine what a smartphone is. Instead, it is attempting to perfect what a flagship smartphone can be.

Samsung is no longer trying to redefine the smartphone — it is attempting to perfect it.

More importantly, this device reveals something about the future of personal technology itself.

Three Types of Smartphone Users

To understand the Galaxy S26 Ultra, it helps to understand who today’s smartphone users are.

The first group consists of people who still rely heavily on computers for work and dedicated cameras for photography. Their phone is primarily a communication and content consumption device. This is where I personally fit.

The second group uses a laptop regularly but does not own a dedicated camera. For them, the smartphone has become their primary imaging tool, whether for family photos, social media, or content creation.

The third group is the most interesting. These are people who do almost everything on their phone. Photography, video editing, communication, productivity, research, business management, and increasingly, AI-powered tasks all happen on a single device that fits in their pocket.

  • For the first group, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is an excellent smartphone.
  • For the second group, it is more than excellent.
  • For the third group, it may well be the most complete smartphone available today.

Samsung’s Culture of Quiet Innovation

Much of the smartphone industry focuses on specifications and benchmark scores, but Samsung has spent years building its reputation on something else: practical innovation.

Many of the features we now take for granted appeared first on Samsung devices. Eye-tracking features, intelligent display behaviour, the revolutionary Galaxy Note series and its integrated S Pen, and countless software innovations all contributed to shaping the modern smartphone experience.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra continues that tradition.

One particularly interesting addition is Samsung’s Privacy Screen technology, which allows users to control viewing angles and screen visibility in a far more sophisticated way than traditional privacy protectors. Rather than relying on an accessory, privacy becomes an integrated part of the device itself, with the flexibility to tailor it to different applications and use cases.

It is exactly the kind of feature that does not generate headlines but can have a meaningful impact on everyday use.

The AI Phone Becomes a Reality

Over the past two years, artificial intelligence has become the defining conversation in consumer technology. Yet there is often a significant gap between marketing claims and practical value.

What I appreciate about Samsung’s approach is that AI is not being presented as a separate feature. It is becoming part of the operating system itself.

The integration of Gemini and cross-application functionality allows the phone to perform tasks that previously required multiple apps and several manual steps. Whether that involves organising information, assisting with planning, or interacting with other services, the experience feels increasingly natural.

The real story here is not what AI can do today. It is where this trend is heading.

That said, there is an important reality that many users overlook. AI results depend heavily on the quality of the prompts being provided. Many people try AI features and fail to achieve the results they see in demonstrations simply because they are not communicating effectively with the system. As AI becomes more capable, prompt writing itself is likely to become an essential digital skill.

Flagship Hardware Without Compromise

As expected from Samsung’s flagship device, performance is effectively uncompromised. The processor delivers excellent responsiveness, multitasking is effortless, and the overall experience feels consistently fast regardless of workload.

The only area where Samsung continues to take a relatively conservative approach is battery technology. While some competitors have begun embracing newer battery designs, Samsung remains cautious. Fortunately, efficiency improvements in the latest processor help deliver slightly better battery life than previous generations. For most users, battery performance will be more than sufficient.

The Camera Story Is About More Than Megapixels

At first glance, some may assume that the camera system has not changed dramatically from previous generations. That would be a mistake.

Photography is rarely transformed by megapixel counts alone. Some of the most meaningful improvements happen in areas that are less visible on a specification sheet: lens design, aperture improvements, sensor performance, and image processing.

One of the most important developments in the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the use of wider apertures on key cameras. For photographers, this matters enormously. A wider aperture allows more light to reach the sensor. More light means less digital amplification is required. Less amplification means cleaner files, better image quality, and stronger performance in difficult lighting conditions.

This may sound like a technical detail, but it directly influences the final image.

During our chart testing, the cameras delivered excellent sharpness, strong contrast, minimal optical distortion, and very well-controlled chromatic aberration. Performance remained impressive from the centre of the frame all the way to the edges. However, laboratory testing only tells part of the story.

In real-world shooting, the Galaxy S26 Ultra consistently produces attractive images with natural-looking colours, excellent dynamic range, and a level of refinement that reflects Samsung’s years of experience in computational photography.

Video Performance Continues to Impress

If photography is a strength, video may be an even bigger one. The Galaxy S26 Ultra offers a comprehensive set of video tools, including high-resolution recording modes, advanced HDR support, and professional-grade controls. What stands out most is how mature the overall system feels.

Samsung’s Nightography technology delivers noticeably cleaner low-light footage while maintaining detail and reducing noise. The balance between brightness enhancement and image quality is particularly impressive.

The Horizon Lock feature deserves special recognition. Previously associated primarily with action cameras, this technology allows the horizon to remain level even when the phone is rotated significantly during recording. While it is not always the highest-quality recording mode available, it can be invaluable in situations where stability is the priority.

Auto Framing is another practical addition, automatically tracking subjects and adjusting composition during recording. For solo creators, this feature can effectively replace a camera operator in many situations.

The Hidden Star: Audio Eraser

Among all the new features, one surprised me more than any other. Audio Eraser may not sound revolutionary on paper, but it quickly became one of the most useful tools on the device.

The system analyses different audio elements within a video and allows users to reduce unwanted sounds while preserving the most important ones. In noisy environments, crowded public spaces, or outdoor recordings, this can dramatically improve the final result.

For content creators, it is genuinely valuable. For everyday users, it is simply convenient. Either way, it is the kind of feature that solves a real problem rather than creating a new one.

Verdict

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is not revolutionary because it reinvents the smartphone. It is important because it refines nearly every aspect of the flagship smartphone experience to a remarkably mature level.

It combines one of the strongest camera systems available today with professional-grade video tools, thoughtful AI integration, useful quality-of-life features, and the kind of polish that only comes from years of iteration.

For photographers, content creators, business professionals, and users who increasingly live their digital lives through a single device, Samsung has built a smartphone that is exceptionally difficult to fault.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is not merely a flagship smartphone. It is Samsung’s clearest vision yet of what the future of personal computing looks like.
